DEWA Guide

Ultimate Guide to DEWA

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is the sole provider of electricity and water services in Dubai. Setting up and managing your DEWA account is essential when moving into a new property. The Dubai Land Department (DLD) collaborates with DEWA to streamline these processes, ensuring compliance with the emirate's regulations.

Setting Up Your DEWA Account

You can initiate your DEWA account through the following channels:

  • DEWA Website and Mobile App: Accessible via www.dewa.gov.ae or the DEWA mobile application.
  • Customer Happiness Centers: Visit any DEWA Customer Happiness Center during working hours.
  • Real Estate Agencies: Authorized real estate agencies can assist with DEWA registration, especially when registering your tenancy contract through Ejari.

DEWA Services Overview

DEWA offers three main services:

1. Activation of Electricity and Water (Move-In)

To activate DEWA services for a new residence:

  • Application Submission: Provide necessary documents, including a valid tenancy contract registered with Ejari.
  • Premise Number: Include your property's unique DEWA premise number.
  • Processing Time: Upon successful submission and payment, services are typically activated within 15 hours.
2. Transfer of Services (Move-To)

When relocating within Dubai:

  • Update Information: Submit the new Ejari certificate and premise number.
  • Account Details: Provide your current DEWA account number and specify the move-out date for the previous residence.
  • Security Deposit: The existing deposit will be transferred to the new account. If you move from an apartment to a villa, you may need to pay the difference in the required deposit amount.
3. Deactivation of Services (Move-Out)

To deactivate DEWA services:

  • Provide Details: Enter your 10-digit DEWA contract account number and 9-digit premise number.
  • Set Deactivation Date: Specify your intended move-out date.
  • Clear Outstanding Bills: Ensure all dues are settled.
  • Security Deposit Refund: Choose your preferred method for refund—bank transfer, cheque, or Western Union.

What are the Activation Fees?

There are fees associated with DEWA activation. The fees consist of:

  • Security Deposit:

Understanding Your DEWA Bill

DEWA bills comprise charges for electricity, water, and a housing fee.

  • Housing Fee: Equivalent to 5% of your annual rent, divided into 12 monthly installments, and included in your DEWA bill.
  • Consumption Charges: Based on usage, with tariffs structured in slabs. For instance:
    • Electricity:
      • Up to 2,000 kWh: 23 fils per kWh
      • Above 2,000 kWh: Higher rates apply
    • Water:
      • Up to 6,000 gallons: 3.5 fils per gallon
      • Above 6,000 gallons: Higher rates apply

What are the Payment Methods for my DEWA bill?

DEWA offers multiple payment options for customer convenience:

  • Banks: Participating banks' ATMs and online banking services.
  • Payment Machines: Etisalat Public Payment Machines.
  • Service Centers: DEWA Customer Happiness Centers.

  • DEWA Store: Offers energy-efficient appliances and devices to help reduce consumption.

Energy Conservation Tips

Living in Dubai, it is not surprising to see your DEWA bill skyrocket, especially during the hot summer days. Villas are more likely to have higher bills, especially those with gardens and pools. DEWA stated that the highest energy consumption in Dubai occurs between 12pm to 6pm. To manage and reduce your DEWA bills:

  • Air Conditioning: Regularly clean filters to maintain efficiency.
  • Natural Light: Utilize daylight and minimize artificial lighting.
  • Appliances: Use energy-efficient appliances and unplug devices when not in use.
  • Water Usage: Fix leaks promptly and use water-saving fixtures.
  • Laundry: Operate washing machines with full loads and during off-peak hours.
